Brazilian Bioethanol Science and Technology Laboratory (CTBE)

The challenge of Brazilian Bioethanol Science and Technology Laboratory (CTBE) is to seek for solutions to technological bottlenecks in the production chain of ethanol from sugarcane. Development of an efficient and sustainable technology for conversion of sugarcane biomass into energy is one of the Laboratory goals, among others.

Data from the Ethanol Project (2005), which inspired the creation of CTBE, show that Brazil has the potential to produce 250 billion litters anually of bioethanol by 2025, replacing 10% of the global demand for gasoline without compromising rain forests or food production. In order to achieve this objective, it is crucial to invest in science and technology, agricultural productivity improvement, industrial processes optimization and sugarcane trash and bagasse conversion into ethanol.

CTBE develops five research programs dedicates to the agricultural, industry, technology assessment, basic research and sustainanbility of ethanol from sugarcane areas. Until 2013, the Laboratoy will house up to 110 professionals (inclunding researchers, engineers, interns and PHD and graduate students).

The 9.000 square meters CTBE's research facilities are open to ouside groups. Industrial partnerships are highly stimulated through a relationship policy that includes rules for risks and benefits sharing, and R&D transfer.

The visit to CTBE is an opportunity to get acquainted with its modern facilities and qualified staff.
